Is Canning Safe?

Whenever you are canning, safety has to be the top concern. Home canning can produce shelf stable food items that are safe to store and eat for long periods of time but in order to ensure the safety of everything you can, you should always follow these safety tips.

Never skip steps when canning.

Follow all directions exactly.

Only use recipes approved by the National Center for Home Food Preservation.

Never swap ingredients in or out of a recipe.

Do not change the amount of ingredients in a recipe.

Never use jars that are damaged.

Never re-use the flat disk portion of a two-part lid.

Check the seal on every jar before storing.

Check for signs of spoilage before using the contents of any jar.

Discard any food that shows any sign of spoilage.

Store any remaining food in the refrigerator once the jar has been opened.

Use only boiling water and pressure canning methods for canning. These are the only two methods of processing that have been deemed safe for home use.
